The OZ Encounter - Bookplate

  1. THE OZ ENCOUNTER: Bookplate - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board.

On rare occasions I encountered a publisher, or an editor, or an art dealer, without honor. They commissioned me to do work for them but they did not come through with payment. I was typically given the old con, "the check is in the mail."

In this case, a small press publisher planned to reprint a paperback book, "The Oz Encounter," in a hardcover edition. That paperback had been published years earlier, it featured my artwork on the inside pages. Now, I was being asked for permission to use my artwork in the new hardcover edition, and, I was also asked to do a new drawing that would be used as a signature plate for the new edition.

Some small press publishers can't afford to pay much for artwork so they offer complimentary copies of the book as payment, which includes a special signed and numbered copy. Since I did not expect to get any more royalties for my OZ paperback artwork, I thought it would be nice to have that artwork published in a hardcover book printed on good paper. So I agreed to do it!

But, it has been several years since the new hardcover book was published and I have not as yet received my copies of the book. I have sent the publisher several emails, reminding him to send me my copies, and each time the response has been, "the books are in the mail". But so far I have not received them.

I'm mad! I spent several hours working on this monkey, and it turns out the publisher made a monkey out of me!
